I approached this book with low expectations, as the leading Amazon review rates it poorly. However, while the format is a little different from previous books, it’s worth noting that Lee Child has often played around with structure, most notable with his shifts between first-person and third-person narration.
Without spoiling anything, this book is a masterclass in tension. A lot of chapters are from a young couples’ perspective, and while they don’t know what’s happening to them, we know it’s likely trouble. Reacher is nearby getting into his own scrapes – and some family history, which always helps humanize Jack Reacher as a character.
Overall, I’d rate this as one of Child’s best – easily one to recommend for others to try if they’ve never read a Lee Child novel before.
