It isn’t a bad book – but it isn’t concise, either.
There’s a scene where the only point that needs to be made is that the main character – Kinsey – isn’t sure whether to attend someone’s funeral or not. It takes *9* pages of chattering with the widow over a cup of tea about their marriage and looking at photos, etc, none of which is relevant to the story.
Which pretty much defines this novel – too much padding, and not enough getting to the point.
On the plus side, at book #23 there’s clearly a lot been going on and there are plenty of references to this. While I’ve not read any others, there was clearly an attempt to bring up relevant past information – but see the complaint above about not getting to the point.
Not a bad novel to try if you’re dipping into thrillers, but probably not the best example of the genre. If you’re going to try Sue Grafton, you’re probably better starting with the first book, rather than mid-series, to get the most out of her writing.
